The default admin password must be changed on first login. Wi-Fi name and password are on the gateway label and are usually managed in the Xfinity app.

Which Xfinity gateway do you have?

Comcast rents combined modem-and-router units it calls xFi Gateways. Over the years these have included models Comcast refers to as XB6, XB7 and XB8 (the "xFi Advanced Gateway"), built by several manufacturers. Comcast keeps rolling out new hardware, so the easiest way to identify yours is the label on the bottom or back of the unit, or the device section of the Xfinity app. The login method below is the same across current models; what differs is how many settings remain editable in the local admin tool.

How to log in to the Xfinity admin tool

1. Connect to the gateway

Join your home Wi-Fi or plug a computer into one of the gateway's Ethernet ports. If you are on a phone, switch off mobile data so the browser does not try to reach 10.0.0.1 over the cellular network. A VPN on the device can also block access to local addresses.

2. Go to 10.0.0.1

Type 10.0.0.1 into the address bar and press Enter. You should see the Xfinity Gateway login screen. If the page does not load, see the 10.0.0.1 guide or the can't access router checklist.

3. Enter admin and the password

The username is admin. The password is password on a gateway that has never been customized; otherwise use the one you chose. After the first sign-in with the default, the gateway asks you to set a new one. Do it: the default is publicly known.

4. Find your way around

The admin tool shows the gateway status, connected devices and a set of menus for the gateway, connection, firewall and advanced options. Exact labels differ by model and firmware. If a section shows a message about the Xfinity app, that setting is managed from your account instead of locally.

Using the Xfinity app instead

Comcast's preferred way to manage home Wi-Fi is the Xfinity app (iOS and Android) or xfinity.com/myxfi in a browser. Sign in with your Xfinity ID. From there you can typically:

  • See and change the Wi-Fi network name and password
  • View connected devices, assign them to profiles and pause internet access
  • Run a gateway restart or connection troubleshooting
  • Manage xFi Pods and xFi Advanced Security, where included with your service
  • Set up port forwarding on gateways where it has moved to the app

Because the app talks to the gateway through Comcast's servers, it works from anywhere, not only from inside your home. It also means the app keeps working after a gateway reset, and Wi-Fi settings saved there are usually restored automatically. For generic steps that apply to any router, see how to change your Wi-Fi password.

Bridge mode and using your own router

If you prefer your own router or mesh system, you have two options. The cleaner one is bridge mode: the gateway stops routing, turns off its Wi-Fi and passes the public IP address to the router you plug into it. The setting is in the 10.0.0.1 admin tool. While bridge mode is on, the Xfinity app can no longer manage your home network and xFi Pods will not work.

The alternative is to leave the gateway in router mode and connect your own router behind it. That creates double NAT, which usually works for browsing and streaming but can cause trouble with gaming, VPN servers and port forwarding. You can also replace the rental entirely with a customer-owned cable modem that Xfinity has approved; see modem vs router for how the two pieces fit together.

Common Xfinity gateway problems

10.0.0.1 does not load

Make sure you are connected to the Xfinity gateway and not to a mesh extender, a neighbor's network or the public xfinitywifi hotspot. If your own router sits in front and the gateway is in bridge mode, 10.0.0.1 will not respond from your home network; connect a computer directly to the gateway.

Wi-Fi changes do not stick

If you edit Wi-Fi settings locally and they revert, the gateway is probably syncing them from your Xfinity account. Make the change in the Xfinity app instead.

Internet is down

Restart the gateway from the app or by unplugging power for 30 seconds. Check the coax connection at both the wall and the gateway. The Xfinity app and the Xfinity Status Center can show whether there is a known outage in your area before you start resetting things.

Frequently asked questions

What is the default Xfinity router login?

The Xfinity Gateway admin tool lives at 10.0.0.1. The default username is admin and the default password is password. The first time you sign in with those, the gateway asks you to choose a new password. If the default no longer works, someone already changed it. Your Wi-Fi network name and Wi-Fi password are different credentials: they are printed on the gateway label and can be changed in the Xfinity app.

Why does 10.0.0.1 send me to the Xfinity app?

Comcast has moved most everyday settings into the Xfinity app (and the xFi web page at xfinity.com/myxfi). On many current xFi gateways the local admin tool still loads, but some sections, most often the Wi-Fi name and password, show a message pointing you to the app instead of letting you edit them locally. This is expected behavior, not a fault. Advanced options such as bridge mode, port forwarding and DHCP settings are still found in the admin tool on many models, while others are only exposed in the app.

I forgot my Xfinity admin password. What now?

The admin tool password can only be recovered by a factory reset of the gateway: hold the recessed Reset button for about 30 seconds while the gateway is powered on. That restores admin / password for the admin tool, but it also erases any custom settings you made locally (port forwards, DHCP reservations, bridge mode). Settings stored in your Xfinity account, such as the Wi-Fi name and password you set in the app, are usually pushed back to the gateway once it reconnects. For other options see forgot router password.

How do I put an Xfinity gateway in bridge mode?

Sign in to the admin tool at 10.0.0.1 and look for the Bridge Mode setting, which on many models sits on the gateway's main "At a Glance" page. Enabling it turns off the gateway's routing and Wi-Fi, so your own router receives the public IP address. Be aware that bridge mode disables xFi features: in-app device management, xFi Advanced Security and xFi Pods stop working. To undo it, connect directly to the gateway by Ethernet, open 10.0.0.1 again and disable the setting, or perform a factory reset.

Can I use my own modem instead of renting from Xfinity?

Generally yes. Xfinity lets you use a compatible customer-owned cable modem for internet service, and keeps a list of approved devices on its support site. The modem must support the DOCSIS version your plan needs (DOCSIS 3.1 for the faster tiers). Two caveats: Xfinity Voice needs a compatible voice-capable modem, and some features or plans tied to the xFi gateway (such as xFi Pods or certain unlimited data options) may not be available with your own equipment. Check the current terms with Xfinity before returning the gateway.

What is the xfinitywifi network coming from my gateway?

Xfinity gateways can broadcast a separate public hotspot named xfinitywifi that other Xfinity customers can use. It is isolated from your home network and, according to Comcast, does not use your plan's bandwidth allocation. You can opt out of the public hotspot from your Xfinity account settings or by contacting Xfinity. It is not managed from the 10.0.0.1 admin tool.
