routerlogin.net The factory password is the word password, not admin. Setup asks you to change it. Orbi uses orbilogin.com.
Popular Netgear models
Netgear also sells cable modem-router combos (Nighthawk C and CAX series) and mobile hotspots, which can use different addresses. Always check the label on your unit.
| Model | IP | Username | Password | Type |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Nighthawk R7000 (AC1900) | 192.168.1.1 | admin | password | Wi-Fi 5 |
| Nighthawk RAX50 (AX5400) | 192.168.1.1 | admin | password (changed at setup) | Wi-Fi 6 |
| Nighthawk RS700S | 192.168.1.1 | admin | set at first setup | Wi-Fi 7 |
| Orbi RBK752 / RBK852 | 192.168.1.1 | admin | password (changed at setup) | Mesh Wi-Fi 6 |
How to log in to a Netgear router
1. Connect to the router
Join the Wi-Fi network shown on the label (NETGEARxx or ORBIxx by default) or plug an Ethernet cable into a LAN port.
2. Open routerlogin.net or orbilogin.com
If the page does not load, type 192.168.1.1 instead. If that fails too,
check the "Default Gateway" on your device; behind an ISP gateway the Netgear may be on
another address.
3. Sign in as admin
The username is always admin. Enter the password you set during setup. On a
new or reset router, the factory password is password, and the router will
prompt you to change it.
Orbi mesh setup
- Connect the Orbi router (the unit labeled as the router, with a WAN/Internet port) to your modem or ISP gateway with Ethernet.
- Power on the router, then the satellites.
- Follow the Orbi app or go to
orbilogin.comin a browser to run setup. - Set the Wi-Fi name, Wi-Fi password and admin password.
- Wait for the satellites to sync. Their ring LEDs indicate connection quality; a poor result means the satellite should move closer to the router.
Many Orbi models dedicate one radio to communication between router and satellites (backhaul), which is why their coverage tends to hold up well in larger homes. If your home has Ethernet runs, a wired backhaul is even better.
Change the Wi-Fi password on Netgear
- Log in and open Wireless (on most models: Basic → Wireless).
- Find the Password (Network Key) field for each band.
- Choose WPA2-PSK [AES] or WPA2/WPA3 where available.
- Click Apply and reconnect your devices with the new password.
Common Netgear problems
Login keeps redirecting back to the setup wizard
This happens when setup was never completed. Finish the wizard (it may ask you to download the app) or, in the browser, look for an option to skip app setup and continue on the web.
Wi-Fi instability after a firmware update
Restart the router once after any update. If a specific device keeps dropping, try disabling features like Smart Connect or WPA3 temporarily to see whether that device has a compatibility issue, and check Netgear’s support site for a newer release.
Cannot reach routerlogin.net from a phone
Turn off cellular data, disable "Private DNS" on Android or any VPN, and make sure you joined the Netgear network rather than your ISP gateway’s network. See can’t access your router for a full checklist.
Frequently asked questions
What is the default Netgear router password?
Netgear routers use the username admin and the factory password password (the actual word), not admin / admin. Current Nighthawk and Orbi setup, whether in the browser or the Nighthawk or Orbi app, asks you to replace it with your own password, so on most configured routers the factory password no longer works. The Wi-Fi network key printed on the label is a separate password used only to join the network.
Why does routerlogin.net not work?
routerlogin.net and routerlogin.com are intercepted by the Netgear router itself, so they only work when your device is connected to it. A VPN, a custom DNS server, a browser "secure DNS" setting, or being on cellular data will send you elsewhere. Connect directly to the router and use 192.168.1.1. If your Netgear sits behind an ISP gateway that also uses 192.168.1.1, many Netgear routers move their own address automatically to avoid a conflict (for example to 10.0.0.1); look at the "Default Gateway" on your computer to see which one it picked.
What is the difference between Nighthawk and Orbi?
Nighthawk is Netgear’s line of standalone routers (plus cable modem-router combos and mobile hotspots). Orbi is its mesh line: a main router plus one or more satellites, with many models using a dedicated wireless band between the units (backhaul) so client traffic does not compete with mesh traffic. Both use the same admin account. Nighthawk uses routerlogin.net; Orbi uses orbilogin.com.
Do I need the Nighthawk or Orbi app?
No, but it is the default setup path on newer models. The app handles setup, firmware updates and basic settings, and some features such as Netgear Armor security and Smart Parental Controls are tied to it and may require a subscription. Advanced settings like port forwarding, DNS and DHCP reservations remain available in the browser at routerlogin.net or orbilogin.com.
How do I reset a Netgear router?
With the router on, press and hold the recessed Reset button with a paperclip for about 7 seconds, until the power LED starts blinking, then release. The router restarts with factory settings: admin / password for the admin page and the Wi-Fi name and key from the label. On Orbi, reset the main router; satellites can be reset individually the same way and re-synced. See our reset guide for what gets erased.
