Frequently asked questions
What is the default D-Link router password?
Older D-Link routers (most DIR models) use the username admin with a blank password: leave the password field empty. Newer models, including the EAGLE PRO AI line, ask you to create an admin password during the setup wizard, and some print a device password on the label or quick install card. If the router has been set up before and you do not know the password, a factory reset is the only way back in.
Why does dlinkrouter.local not work?
dlinkrouter.local (on some models http://dlinkrouter) is resolved by the router on your local network. It fails if you are on a different network, using a VPN, or your device bypasses the router’s DNS. Older versions of Windows and some Android devices also handle .local names inconsistently. Use the IP address 192.168.0.1 instead; if the router is behind an ISP gateway, look up the "Default Gateway" on your device.
Is my older D-Link router still safe to use?
Check whether your model is still supported. D-Link publishes end-of-life notices, and for a number of older DIR models it has issued security advisories telling owners to retire and replace them because no further firmware fixes will be released. You can look up your model on D-Link’s support site. If it is end-of-life, replacing it is the safest option, especially if remote management was ever enabled.
How do I update the firmware on a D-Link router?
Log in and look for Management → Upgrade (wording varies; on older models Tools → Firmware). Newer models can check for and install updates automatically. If you download firmware manually, get it only from D-Link’s support site for your exact model and hardware revision (printed on the label as "H/W Ver."). Do not power off the router during the update.
