Which devices use 192.168.178.1

All FRITZ!Box routers use 192.168.178.1 by default, regardless of how they connect to the internet. The range includes:

  • DSL models (for example the 7530 and 7590 families) with a built-in VDSL/ADSL modem.
  • Cable models with a built-in DOCSIS modem, built for European cable networks.
  • Fiber models with a built-in fiber interface, plus router-only models (such as the 4000-series) that connect to a separate ONT or modem over Ethernet.
  • LTE/5G models that use a mobile connection.

FRITZ! mesh repeaters joined to a FRITZ!Box get their own address from the router; you normally manage them from the FRITZ!Box interface. More background is in the FRITZ!Box login guide.

In the US, FRITZ!Box routers are uncommon. Built-in DSL, cable and fiber modems target European standards and are generally not on US ISPs' approved device lists, so a FRITZ!Box in a US home is usually a router-only setup: its WAN port plugged into a cable modem, a fiber ONT or an ISP gateway in bridge or passthrough mode.

How to log in to 192.168.178.1

  1. Connect to the FRITZ!Box Wi-Fi (the default name starts with FRITZ!Box) or to a LAN port with an Ethernet cable.
  2. Open http://fritz.box or http://192.168.178.1 in your browser.
  3. Enter the password. Use the FRITZ!Box password from the label on the bottom of the device, or the password you set yourself.
  4. Follow the wizard on first login to choose your internet connection type and confirm the Wi-Fi settings.

The FRITZ!Box password (for the user interface) and the Wi-Fi network key are two separate values printed on the same label. Mixing them up is the most common reason a login fails.

If you forgot the FRITZ!Box password

A changed password cannot be recovered or read out. The way back in is a factory reset, which erases your settings and restores the label password:

  1. From the login page: select Forgot password? and follow the steps to restore factory settings. The FRITZ!Box asks you to confirm on the device itself, for example by restarting it or pressing a button within a time window, so nobody can reset it remotely.
  2. From the menu (if you can still sign in): use the restore option in the system or backup settings.
  3. With a telephone on models that have a FON port: a code dialed from a connected analog phone can trigger a reset. The manufacturer's support pages list the exact code for your model.

Save a backup of your settings before you change anything important, so a reset doesn't mean starting from scratch. The general router reset guide covers what to expect after a reset.

If 192.168.178.1 won't open

  1. Check the network. Make sure you are on the FRITZ!Box network, not an ISP gateway in front of it, and that mobile data and VPNs are off.
  2. Use the IP instead of the name. Custom DNS settings can stop fritz.box from resolving.
  3. Check the gateway address. If someone changed the FRITZ!Box address, your device's default gateway shows the new one.
  4. Try the emergency address. Give your computer a wired connection and open http://169.254.1.1.
  5. Restart the FRITZ!Box and wait until the Power/Info lights settle before trying again.

More general fixes are in can't access your router.

Frequently asked questions

What is the default password for 192.168.178.1?

FRITZ!Box routers do not share a common admin/admin login. Recent models ship with a unique FRITZ!Box password printed on the label on the bottom of the device (and often on an included info card). Older models had no password at all and asked you to create one the first time you opened the user interface. By default you only enter a password, not a username; a username field appears only if user accounts have been set up.

Why does a FRITZ!Box use 192.168.178.1 instead of 192.168.1.1?

It is the manufacturer's long-standing default. Choosing an unusual subnet makes conflicts less likely when a FRITZ!Box is connected behind another router or gateway, because the two devices will almost never pick the same range. You can change the address in the network settings if you need to.

fritz.box does not open. What should I try?

The name fritz.box only works when your device uses the FRITZ!Box for DNS. If you set a custom DNS server on your computer, use a VPN, or have the FRITZ!Box behind another router, the name may not resolve. Type http://192.168.178.1 instead. If that fails too, connect a computer by cable and try the emergency address 169.254.1.1, which the FRITZ!Box answers on its LAN ports even when its normal IP settings are wrong.

Can I use a FRITZ!Box in the US?

FRITZ!Box routers are designed mainly for European markets and are not widely sold in the US. A router-only model, connected to a fiber ONT or a cable modem, can work as an ordinary router with its Ethernet WAN port. Models with built-in DSL, cable or fiber modems are built for European line standards and are generally not on US internet providers' approved device lists, so check with your ISP before relying on one. Telephone features are built for European phone services.

I forgot my FRITZ!Box password. Do I have to reset it?

If you never changed the password, try the one printed on the label. If you changed it and lost it, the only recovery is a factory reset, which erases your settings. The login page offers a Forgot password? option that walks you through restoring factory settings and asks you to prove physical access to the device. After the reset, the label password works again.
